The first swallows arrived back in the first week of May.  It’s always such a heartening sight and sound reminding us that spring has well and truly sprung.  For the past couple of years we’ve had swallows nesting in the porch of The Green House.  Lovely you might think, however it’s a messy business when they decide to build their nest right on top of the security lights. On their first visit some very kind and ingenious guests constructed a makeshift nursery out of a strawberry punnet to avoid the whole nest collapsing under the weight of the growing chicks.

Last year I put up a fake nest away from the door to avoid the dropping mess on the doorstep, which they were happy to use, but frustratingly this year they have gone back to their original preferred spot.  The flower pot beneath has been moved to avoid being splattered…

Update 28th June – the precariously balanced nest is full of fat baby swallows ready to test their wings.
